I guess my last post was too long..

When replacing cat with a high flow aftermarket one, is the air injection still necessary? Due to my car's unique fuel system the air pump isn't part of the visual equipment check, so I just want to know if the exhaust will still look clean without the air pump.

If the inspectors only do a visual ( and don't stick a sniffer in the exhaust pipe), and they don't care about the Thermactor II piping even though you can run on gasoline, then you are probably golden. But, only your inspector knows for sure.

They sniff it, on a chassis dyno under load - so I have to still produce "clean" exhaust on both fuels to pass. I can legally drive with just a passing score on one fuel even if it's capable of running both, the law gets a bit vague but the DMV inspector said officially I have to "tag off" any fuel system that can't provide a passing emissions result.

I want to keep clean and legal... just don't know if an aftermarket high flow cat without air injection will do that - like my 2001 S10 doesn't have air injection and passes...

I got a direct fit hi flow magnaflow cat with the air tubes on it for $94.91 from performancepeddler (free shipping). It made a big difference in performance of my 93 2.3.

Depends on what they sniff for, HC, CO and NOx. If so and you have converter with no airtube, may be a HC, CO type only. The airtube added when converting all three. You may fail NOx with that one. I'd check, later converters may be good enough to do all three without the air in middle. To my knowledge there is no air pump on later Tempo, it uses a passive pulse air system, at least on the fours.

The NOx reducing section is in the front because that reduction does not like extra oxygen. The air then added in the middle for the rear brick which reduces HC and CO, need more oxygen for that. Ask your inspector if they check for NOx, some states don't, requires much more expensive tester. If they don't you can get by with no air to converter unless they fail it for no visible airtubes.
