OK, below is a list of cylinder head casting numbers and the associated pics for the ones I have been able to get so far. If anyone can add to these pics of heads, or has any other casing numbers, then PLEASE get them to me with PICS if possible. I will update this post with that info, then.

All exhaust ports are the same and any year exhaust manifold will bolt to any year head.

Even though there are differences in the intake port shapes and sizes, Any year intake will bolt to any year head. you may lose performance though because of the non matching shapes. (But I would like to see an e53e or an e73e-ca head on a gen 3 car. I think that would be a really good setup with stock parts. The change in ports is very small, and with some machinist blue and an die grinder, you could easily open on that small corner).

Any year head bolts to any year block.

Round Ports = Round Intake ports
D Ports = "D" shaped ports (like a "D" laying on its back)
Square Ports = Almost Square ports, but one corner is rounded JUST like the "D" port.
All Exhaust ports are the same (Round).

Decode Casting Numbers:
1st 2 digits are the design year: e4=84, e5=85, e6=86, e7=87, e8=88, f1 = 91.
2nd 2 digits are the car model desiged for: 3e=Tempo.

2.3 HSC : E43E-AH : Heart Shaped Chamber : Round Ports
2.3 HSC : E43E-AJ : Heart Shaped Chamber : Round Ports
2.3 HSO : E53E : Oval Shaped Chamber : Unknown Ports
2.5 HSC : E63E-CB : Heart Shaped Chamber : D Shaped Ports
2.3 HSC : E73E-BA : Heart Shaped Chamber : Round ports
2.3 HSO : E73E-CA : Oval Shaped Chamber : D shaped ports
2.3 HSC : E83E-D3B : Heart Shaped Chamber : Almost Square ports

2.3 HSC : E83E-DG : Heart Shaped Chamber : Almost Square ports
2.3 HSC : E83E-B11B : Heart Shaped Chamber : Almost Square ports

I have an f13e-a3a head in my garage I have not taken pictures of yet. If anyone else has any of the heads listed that do NOT have pictures, please post pictures of them.

sure, I don't know if they made different heads for the vulcan or not. that was the main reason for this. to document all the different heads for the 2.3

What's so goofy about all this is that changes were made willy-nilly to the head left and right, but no one touches the worst feature, the absolutely worse than horrible super low exhaust port. The height approaches absolutely the worst of all possible angles. A product of the engine's heritage from inline six cylinders. Exhaust guarantees that the engine will NEVER make big power.

The tempo engine was made for high torque and great fuel economy . not for racing and high hp . if your looking for high hp high reving engine then the tempo is not what your looking for.
some of us " in cluding me " have moded tempo engine with over 160hp 200lbs or torque that rev ezzaly to 6500rpm + . but with time and lots of cash. there is 2.3L ohc that are better engines .
but I rader take a low power engine and make it better. its a chalenge. the 1.9L HO is a great engine too.
