My Tempo has a dual fuel system, CNG and gasoline. To pass emissions in my county I need to demonstrate a passing score on both fuels. Vehicle is placed on a chassis dyno and operated under load, magic sniffing apparatus is placed over tailpipe to measure actual emissions.
The visual inspection checks for various smog control apparatus but because of the location and bulk of the CNG regulator, the air pump is impossible for the technician to check and he exempts it.
When running on CNG, combustion is almost entirely complete and devoid of hydrocarbon particulate matter - as in, the catalytic converter isn't doing anything at all. If I chose to remove the gasoline fuel system from my car and run on CNG, no catalyst would be necessary.
I'm trying to improve highway performance and efficiency. With the 3 speed auto, and the high RPM's it makes the engine spin at highway speeds, it seems obvious that aspiration improvements are the first priority.
My question is, will a universal aftermarket high flow cat, WITHOUT air injection, pass emissions? Or, do I need to keep the air injection and find a cat that has the inlets?
Thanks! |
